Must or Bust Baby Products

The time has arrived for me and Michael to start buying the necessities (and maybe some non-necessities) for our baby. We know that a lot of you have children of your own or at least are around children enough to know what baby products you like and don't like. So we're coming to you for suggestions.

What are the products that you like the most, and what are some products that you suggest we stay away from? Are there any specific products that we might not think about that you just love?

For example, we have heard that a breast feeding pillow is a must. We've also heard that diaper genies are a bust.

If you have any ideas please click on the "comment" link at the bottom right of this post and share your thoughts.

Okay....the Medela breat pump is the absolute best. You can use batteries or plug it in and it actually works. I don't care for the diaper genie but others might. Get a snap in carseat....the type where the base stays in the car, but you take the seat with you. While your doing that you might as well buy the whole set up, stroller, base and carseat....those are great. I never had a breast feeding pillow, but I have heard alot of good things about them. Especially while the baby is so tiny and such a "sack of potatoes". You have to get a baby bouncer, it will save your life. You can set it on your table while you cook dinner and the baby loves the vibration. Anyways, good luck and happy baby shopping....I already have your baby gift, but it might change to something else if I can't keep my fingers off it, since I currently have a one month baby whom I would love to have it for.....(just kidding) Good luck...Love, "Aunt" Katie

Oh boy...you have asked the wrong person on this one. You are about to get an ear full.... Here it goes!

    Must:
    -Boppy Pillow
-Jogging Stroller - Awesome for jogging/walking on ALL terrains
-Thick Cloth Diapers to use as Burp Cloths
    -Ear Thermometer
-if breastfeeding.....Gerber Zip Lock Storage Bags
-Bouncy Seat - Definitely a MUST! Can take it any place in the house and it leaves your hands free to get stuff done. Used it all day everday in the first few months.
-Exersaucer - This took the place of the Bouncy Seat around 5-6 months.
-The Ultimate Crib Sheet (two) - Can only be found at Babys R Us - It has snaps all the way around so you don't have to take the crib bumper off and pull the mattress up to change sheets when doing laundry. So much easier!! LOVE IT!
-If you are a germ freak like me a grocery cart cover. Cole is almost 2 and I still use it!!! I'm a freak when it comes to grocery carts and restaurant highchairs :)
-Video Monitor - For us, it was well worth the money spent. It was such a comfort for a new Mommy like me to be able to see him sleeping from any place in the house and know he was okay.

    Bust:
    -I agree, the diaper genie
-Baby Bjorn Carrier - I think it really depends on the babies preferences. I would borrow one and see if she likes it before you spend the money on one.
-Wipe Warmer - Never had one - Never needed one - It never seemed to bother Cole
-Bottle Warmer - Again, never had one. When I stopped breastfeeding, Cole did perfect on room temp bottles.

That is all for now. I'm sure I will think of more. Told you that you would get an ear full.....

Lisa Tickner (Do you even know me by that last name??? If not Miller will help. :)

-little snacks strategically located around the house to give them when they do something good
-kennel (just big enough where they can turn around and lay down)
-dresser (note: must actually use dresser. no more leaving clothes laying around.)
-mud blanket for the back seat
    -leash

    bust:
-stuffed toys (the guts will end up all over the house)
-doggie pillow (they'll lay everywhere except where you want them to)
    -cats
-dog food (they like the cat food better)
    -new carpet
    -manicured lawn
    -squeaky toys (AAHHH!)

    hope this helps.

Hey girl. After I go through my normal day tomorrow, I will be able to give you a better list of things but on the spot, I can only think of a few. I will write them down as I go tomorrow and repost a comment.

The Boppy pillow for breastfeeding is an ABSOLUTE MUST. It has worked great for me, especially with my 10 pound, one month old baby! He's heavy and to sit there for 30 minutes and feed him, I'm sure my arm would fall off! Plus, I'm not a pro at it yet and neither is he, so sometimes it takes both of my hands. (i.e. I have to hold my breast in his mouth for when he gets restless and "drops" it, lol).

I have heard the same thing about the diaper genie, that most of the time it won't get used. The only thing we have that is close to that is a trash can with scented trash bags. It's for diapers but it's not an actual diaper genie. The smell stays in, but you can smell it every time you open the lid, so I think a normal trash can would work just as good. We keep is by the changing station in the living room so we can just chunk them as soon as we're done. Sometimes you don't have enough hands or time to go to the kitchen to throw them away (even if it's only a few steps!)

We have a bouncer, which comes in handy, but for Lucas, it only works for 30 minutes tops. What we prefer, and it's a little less convenient but it's a life saver, is the swing. It swings two different ways (normal and cradle) and it plays music, nature sounds and water sounds, has a mobile and a mirror. He loves it and it comes in very handy when we want to sit down to eat dinner together!

Like I said, I will give you a more informed list after tomorrow, I just wanted to give my opinion on the products that you mentioned or were mentioned in your other comments.

    MORE TO COME!!

    Jenna
